Business Operations Specialist

Job description

As the Business Operations Specialist you will be essential to the company as we grow in size and organizational complexity to support our Mission while we simultaneously advance the core Great Expectations open-source product and begin building a SaaS offering.

Reporting directly to the COO, the ideal candidate for this role is a creative project manager who enjoys solving complex problems and is excited by the opportunity to use their broad expertise to help increase COO effectiveness by freeing up bandwidth through collaboration and support across the following:

What You'll Do


    • Provide financial, clerical, and administrative services to ensure efficient, timely and accurate financial statement/reporting preparation

    • Support the documentation of business requirements with respect to models, data, or process

    • Support the development of all budgets, forecasts and supporting analysis

    Expense Administration

    • Assist with creation and implementation of expense policies and procedures

    • Audit and process employee expense reports in an accurate and timely fashion; ensuring compliance with the financial procedures of the organization

    • Provide timely and exceptional customer service and support to key internal and external stakeholders.

    • Answer employee inquiries and resolve any problems associated with expense reports

    • Assist in the corporate audit of expenses as conducted by external independent auditors


    • Review and approve monthly payroll with attention towards changes related to employee status changes, payroll deductions, payroll adjustments, error corrections, wage garnishments, and any special payroll tasks as needed

    • Assist with the company’s open enrollment process as needed

    • Track and approve benefit enrollments, changes and terminations

    • Point of contact for employees on related policies

    • Support preparation of corporate tax returns

    Project Management

    • Support operations and company projects that enhance the value proposition and contribute to establishing best practices within the company

    • Perform special business operations projects as requested

    • Guide projects from initiation to close, ensuring requirements are met for each stage

    • Proactively seek out opportunities to develop consistent and equitable solutions that can be scaled across the organization

    • Ensure appropriate visibility on progress, risks and mitigations to stakeholders


    • Assist in monthly/quarterly and annual preparation of financial statements and supporting documentation; prepare and distribute reports to relevant stakeholders

    • Generate and distribute any ad hoc reports as requested

    • Prepare and submit post-payroll reporting requirements

    • Partner with functional leads to define and track key metrics to measure the success of our initiatives

Job requirements

  • BS/BA degree preferred, or equivalent experience

  • 3-5+ years of experience ideally touching tax/payroll/benefits, reporting and project management

  • Start-up and data quality experience preferred

  • Basic accounting knowledge in chart of accounts, debit/credit and journal posting

  • Ability to serve as a thought partner to the COO and to manage highly sensitive and/or confidential situations and information with maturity and professionalism

  • Highly organized, detail oriented and willing to take on new initiatives

  • Strong analytical and problem solving aptitude, able to manage competing priorities

  • Proven team player with strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Process-oriented critical thinker

  • Quick learner, with the ability to multitask and prioritize work

  • Tremendous sense of urgency and ability to work in a fast-paced and changing environment

  • Excellent client service skills with the ability to develop and maintain business relationships
